63 Patrol Slow Build
#1
Per request I will start a post following my Patrol as I rebuild. I am not in a hurry. I want to get it runningso I can drive it as I go.

My Plan:
1. Get engine running
2. Get brakes working
3. I have a lift kit company interested in using it to prototype suspension kits. I get a free set of springs in return.
4. Eventually, one day, frame of resto

Anyway, here are a few pics.

At the PO's house.

On the way home.

And the addition to the collection. The SAS Frontier is my son's, and the wife's 05 Pathfinder is in the garage.

My son found the last replacement fuel pump, for the one that came off the engine, in NAPA's US inventory, and THE LAST rubber breather to carburetor isolator in Nissan's US inventory. The isolator is basically a rubber tube to connect the carb to the breather. The old one was cracked and crumbling apart.

Have a new Carter carburetor on order to replace the Rochester. I could not find a rebuilt replacement or kit. The carter showed up on ebay. Another Patrol owner is running thte same Carter, so we'll see how well it works. The original.

Found a Factory Service Manual on ebay. It was in Austraila. Came in the mail this past week.

You missed the absence of the alternator. It still has a generator on it. When I get it running, I have to short across one of the terminals to set the polarity, so I am told. 179

Like Okie, I haven't seen an Oil Bath air cleaner for awhile, last one I saw was on a 1956 Ford Victoria, I had the car bug even then, loved the sound of the V8, still do.

The Patrol community wants a 3" soft ride, 3" HD for a winch bumper, 4", and stock replacements. I just want a 3" soft ride and a set of stock replacements.

The true auto enthusiasts are really going to miss that V8 sound when we are all electric. But, then again, how many of us will be left to miss it when that time gets here! There are very few good V8 sounds from OEMs these days. My favorite is the high performance Mustang. The Titan has a really sweet V8 sound right from the dealer.

True about the Titan. After I test drove one I had to look underneath to see if it was factory... it was 185

I've always liked the V8 Chev pickups out of the box sound.

Well I scored a carburetor off eBay. eBay add said Carter YFa. Got it in and found out it was not a Carter, but a Rally knock-off of a Carter YFa carburetor. Seller says the model name is Carter, and not the manufacturer. 175

Then ordered a Carter remanufactured carb that came in today. Decided to take it back cause the throttle doesn't return quite as well as the knock off. As well as some of the other features being questionable, and operating sufficiently. I will just try to make the knock off work, as much as I hate to.

The knock off Carter carb:

I will have to make some modifications to the linkage to get everything lined up. Just going to take my time.

Mike,
I have a copy of FAST on two CDs that you can have. I think it covers all of the old stuff, as well as the newer stuff.
I will put it in the truck. You will have to remind me next time you see me.

Got into the front brakes today. I am going to replace all the lines hard and soft. Got pads and smooth drums, but I'll have the surface touched up. I think I will take the opportunity to add an S10 brake booster and split system. I am going to have to switch back to my old camera for rework pics. These pics are huge.

Here are some pics.

New carburetor installed using SS carriage bolts for carb studs with the head cut off square. I put the flange nuts on the carriage bolt and used the square part to run it down without marring the threads. Then I tightened the flange nuts to secure the carb. I couldn't find 3/8-16 carb suds anywhere. I still have to work on the linkage. My 1/2" spacer was just enough for the carb base to clear the stud in the intake on the front side.

Funny Res. I haven't done much lately.

I replaced the wheel cylinders on both front wheels. The shoes looked like new, so I just painted them up a little and put them back together.
I haven't been able to get the rear drums off yet. We already broke the flange on one of them and don't want to do the same to the other. I have one back up to use for the broke one. I gave up for a little while.

I still need to buy a used brake booster/split master cylinder to make the brakes a little safer. I am also going to replace all the wiring. I picked up Painless wire harness kit, but need to get a new set of gauges.

Sandi, no names yet. I haven't been one to name my vehicles.
